Open and shared. The animals move freely across it, so the view from a room changes through the day without anybody arranging it.

The town

Kanonkop, on the edge of Middelburg — far enough out to be quiet, close enough in that you are not committed to staying put.

The mornings

First light is the busy hour. The springbok come closest to the buildings before anybody is up, and the geese make sure you know it.

Nobody here is in an enclosure. These three are the ones you will certainly meet — recorded, as anything on open ground is recorded, by the marks they leave on the way past.

Grazing on the open ground through the day, and closest to the buildings in the early morning before anybody is up.

Meerkat

Suricata suricatta

In company, always. One stands while the others feed, which is the behaviour most guests end up watching for far longer than they meant to.

Alopochen aegyptiaca

Resident and unbothered. Loud at first light, and entirely indifferent to being walked past.
